Create a Remote Control Session

Remote Control is a browser-based remote session, new in CommandCTRL 1.5. The remote desktop loads in your browser, and the end user is prompted to approve the session before it begins.

Prerequisites

  1. The target machine must have the CommandCTRL agent version 1.5 or later installed.

  2. Your user role must include remote control permissions.

  3. On Windows endpoints, the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (msedgewebview2) must be installed.

  4. On macOS endpoints, the CommandCTRL Remote Control application must be granted Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions (see Grant Remote Control Permissions on macOS).

Browser-based Remote Control is supported on Windows, macOS, Linux (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora, Debian), IGEL, and eLux endpoints running the CommandCTRL 1.5 agent.

Start the Session

  1. Open the end user’s machine dashboard.

  2. In the Current Sessions widget, locate the user’s session and click the Remote icon in that row.

  3. From the menu, select Remote Control. A Connect to <machine> screen opens in your browser and prompts for a 6-character code.

  4. On the endpoint, the end user sees a Receive Support prompt stating that you are requesting to control their screen, along with a 6-character code (for example, s4a-myd). The code times out after about five minutes.

  5. Enter the 6-character code and click Join. If the code has expired, the end user can click Request Connection Again to generate a new one.

  6. The remote desktop loads in your browser and the session begins.

During the Session

While the session is active, both you and the end user can see its status and end it at any time:

  1. The end user sees a CommandCTRL Remote Control window showing your email address (for example, “admin@example.com connected”), a session timer, and an End Connection button.

  2. In your browser, a control bar displays the session timer, a full-screen toggle, and a button to end the session.

Remote Control Capabilities

  1. Multi-monitor — if the endpoint has more than one monitor, you can view one monitor at a time and switch between them.

  2. Clipboard — copy and paste text between your machine and the remote endpoint.

  3. Screenshots — capture a screenshot of the remote session.

Windows limitation: you cannot open an elevated (administrator) command prompt during a Remote Control session.

Grant Remote Control Permissions on macOS

Before you can remotely control a macOS endpoint, the end user must grant the CommandCTRL Remote Control application the following permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security:

  1. Accessibility — enable CommandCTRL Remote Control. The end user is prompted to enter the device user name and password to make this change.

  2. Screen Recording (under Screen & System Audio Recording) — click the + button, choose Applications, and add CommandCTRL Remote Control.

After granting these permissions, you may need to end the current Remote Control session and reconnect. On macOS, Remote Control log files are stored in /Users/<username>/Library/Logs/liquidware/ccrc.
