ProfileUnity Upgrade & Migration Guidance

Use the instructions in the 6.9.5 Upgrade Guide to update your software if the existing MongoDB instance satisfies the requirement noted below.

Note: 6.9.5 requires TLS enforcement of MongoDB traffic. If the current MongoDB instance does not enforce TLS, upgrading to 6.9.5 is not supported. Refer to the migration guide link below for the necessary steps to migrate to 6.9.5.

For Existing Software Installations: Liquidware supports upgrades and migrations to existing ProfileUnity installations that are current on support contracts. See below for more information on product changes that may affect your decision on whether to upgrade or migrate your currently installed version.

Feature Updates Affecting Product Behavior Post Upgrade

Before upgrading, please take note of these product updates:

• MongoDB traffic encryption:

  • MongoDB requires enforcement of TLS encryption to be configured.

• MongoDB mutual TLS authentication:

  • Certificates used by MongoDB for authentication with cluster nodes or from a standalone license server must have both Client Authentication and Server Authentication defined in extended key usage.

• Deployed configuration INI files:

  • The INI files of configurations deployed from the ProfileUnity web console are encrypted by default.

    • Encrypted configurations can only be processed by 6.9.5 clients or later.

      Note: Refresh.exe and Refresh Visual Style (PUPThemes) workarounds are no longer needed.

  • To keep settings such as Volume Level, Number Lock State, Caps Lock State, Scroll Lock State, and Fonts:

    • Turn on each option in Windows Options and add the relevant portability rules prior to configuration deployment.

• Multiple INIs and Group Membership:

  • Version 6.9.5 allows for both older and new INIs with group membership restrictions. Once "Require Group Membership for Execution" has been deselected, it cannot be activated again—move to "Require Filter for Execution" instead.

• User Defined Scripts:

  • In 6.9.5, scripts are executed only if relevant to the user or their filter. If unattended scripts were previously useful, copy them to multiple configurations as appropriate.

However, it may be to your advantage to migrate to a new installation due to several architectural and feature changes. See below for more information on product changes that may affect your decision on whether to upgrade or migrate your currently installed version.

Feature Updates Affecting Product Behavior Post Upgrade

Before upgrading, please take note of these product updates:

• MongoDB traffic encryption:

  • Database traffic is now encrypted in MongoDB but in-place upgrades will not have encrypted database communication.
